Expository: Iyiafor the Deadliest and Dreadest Goddess in Igbo Society By Cosmos Yahzitere Okoh

Historically, the ancient Igbo cosmology was dominated by feminine deities. A's much as the muscline deities spreaded alongside the feminine deities, the feminines were more popular and patronised. This may arise from the fact that feminine deities are compromising and easily followed. The musclines (Gods) are uncompromising, strict and difficult. These reasons were responsible for the popularity of Goddesses like Ani, Idemili, Ajani, Nnemiri, Ogwugwu, Njaba etc. These Goddesses and many of their types spread wide and far in Igboland more than their muscline counterparts. One of the deadliest and evil willed Goddess in Igboland is the IYIAFOR. This evil Goddess appears in like a maphrodite in character. While it is feminine in nature, it also appears muscline in character. The difference between IYIAFOR and other Goddesses in Igboland can be expressed through their representatives. When other Goddesses are represented with Boa (Eke), IYIAFOR is represented by deadly snake. That's reason any community that has IYIAFOR is dreadful in spiritual matters.
Like other Goddesses, people consult IYIAFOR for rituals, sacrifices, propitiations, oathtakings, protection, curses, attacks, poisoning, charming, evocation etc. The worst specific character of IYIAFOR is her association with her daughters that go into marriages. This is dangerous to the families and communities that have no IYIAFOR Goddess or her types. Her types means deadly and jealousy guiding Goddesses like Ezeani (Ezeala).
In the homes of her daughters, IYIAFOR guides, protests and defends her daughters zealously. In any event of dispute between the husband of the daughter of IYIAFOR or the family members, IYIAFOR fights deadly in defence of her daughters. One of the earliest antics of the evil Goddess is to destroy the material and spiritual powers of the husband of her daughters. For instance, if a rich man marries from the people
If a rich man from a community that haven't IYIAFOR marries a maiden from the land with IYIAFOR, he will experience downfall in his business to the level that his wife will feed him and control the family affairs. The punishment and attacks from IYIAFOR may extend to a deadly ill health and other debasement. To be domineering, the evil Goddess inspires it's daughters to be hard working and successive above the efforts of their husbands. In Ibele, 80% of the daughters of IYIAFOR married into the land feeds their husbands. It's also discovered that the daughters of IYIAFOR are trouble shooting, nags alot, quarrels, fights and acts recklessly towards their husbands. Whence they run to their families with cries, they do not investigate the issues but hastly supports their daughters even when they are entirely wrong.
Some of the in-laws to the communities that have IYIAFOR are treated fairly when the in-laws goes to the IYIAFOR Goddess to perform ritual covenant.
This is possible when the in-law is loves by the family of his wife. They will make all arrangements for the in-law to perform the ritual covenant sacrifice at the shrine of IYIAFOR, otherwise the family of the maiden will only inform IYIAFOR Goddess of the intention of her marriage. A ritual sacrifice will be performed on behalf of the maiden and relics raised that the maiden will take to her new home. That is reason it is often said that the daughters of IYIAFOR go to their marriage homes with the Goddess.
Sometimes, when the daughter of IYIAFOR loves her husband dearly and knowing that her husband cannot afford to accompany her to perform the covenant ritual at the shrine of IYIAFOR, she take something like urine, specimen, hair, fasces from her husband and present it to the shrine of IYIAFOR for the covenant ritual in his absence. This may free the husband from attacks of IYIAFOR Goddess.
Truly, IYIAFOR is an evil Goddess that deserved proscription and destruction by true worshipers of Yahweh in all parts of Igbo society. Her shrines are supposed to be cleared, women to defecate on her relics, her worshipers be disgraced and stripped of their evil powers. These attitudes will free many men that married from the land controlled by IYIAFOR Goddess and equally make the maidens of the land to be sober and obedient in their marriages. These will make the couples that have daughters from the land that have IYIAFOR Goddess to enjoy their peaceful marriages because all attacks in their homes are caused by the deadly Goddess. IYIAFOR is the worst and most evil Goddess in entire Igbo land.
In ancient of days, the people of Ibele used to marry daughters from the UMUEZEALA communities. The UMUEZEALA communities spread all over Igbo lands. The communities took their name from the Goddess call “EZEALA”. This is one of the problematic Goddesses in Igbo land, the nature of EZEALA Goddess is relative to IYIAFOR. She jealously protects maidens of her land in their marriages. The major deference between IYIAFOR and EZEALA is that the daughters from the land of EZEALA do not take her relics to communities they marry to. This makes daughters from the land of EZEALA to be un-protective in the communities that have no EZEALA Goddess.
As defenseless maidens, they are exposed to incessant attacks and danger in their married communities. These attacks make their marriage problematic. Many maiden from UMUEZEALA that are married in the community without EZEALA Goddess or her types do not bear fruits. Many of them remain barren and sickly. Their homes are filled with sorrows and pains. This is reason the people of Ibele stopped marring maidens from UMUEZEALA Communities. These evil Goddesses require destruction in Igbo land.
